A trip abroad to Denver, Colorado, allowed me to renew acquaintance with some North American bird species and to make some comparisons between what birding is like in that city at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and conditions here at home in Costa Rica below the Turrialba Volcano.
Un viaje al extranjero a Denver, Colorado, me permitió conocer de nuevo algunas especies de aves norteamericanas y a la misma vez hacer algunas comparaciones entre lo que es pajarear en aquella ciudad al pie de las Montañas Rocosas y las condiciones aquí en casa en las faldas del Volcán Turrialba.

With the aid of daughter, Mariana, I was able to make several excursions to diverse habitats in the Denver area, and we managed a decent list of sightings, which I list below. Turrialba-area birders will note many species (in red) that also occur here, while a few others not so noted can be found in other parts of Costa Rica.
Con la ayuda de mi hija, Mariana, pude hacer varias excursiones a unas biozonas diversas en el área general de la ciudad de Denver. Logramos una lista bastante nutrida de avistamientos, la cual se ve (en inglés) aquí. Los compañeros del área de Turrialba podrán notar la presencia de muchas especies (abajo en rojo) que también se encuentran aquí, mientras que unas pocas otras, no así anotadas, se pueden ver en otras partes de Costa Rica.

I have marked the Yellow-breasted Chat in italics because, although an individual stayed in my garden for months last year, it is a rarity in the Turrialba area. This was also the first time that I had seen the species in the USA. Its behaviour was quite different to its usual skulking habits, because it was singing loudly from the top of a small tree in full sunlight.
La Reinita Grande, la Yellow-breasted Chat, aparece en letra cursiva porque, a pesar de haber estado un individuo en mi jardín durante varios meses el año pasado, raras veces se ve por aquí. Esta es también la primera vez que la veo en EE. UU. Se comportaba de manera muy diferente porque en vez de esconderse en las matas espesas cantaba con voz fuerte desde arriba en un arbolito y bajo un sol espléndido.

The Denver area is an excellent location for birders. We visited in turn Sloan’s Lake Park, which is a fairly large lake in an urban setting, Cherry Creek State Park, also still on the plains and including a very large lake, South Platte Park along the beautiful Platte River, and finally an equally beautiful but very different trail beginning at Matthews-Winters Park and ending at Red Rocks, where the Rocky Mountains begin.
El área de Denver es un lugar excelente para buscar aves. Visitamos uno tras otro cuatro parques, el de Sloan´s Lake, un lago bastante grande en un ambiente urbano, el de Cherry Creek, otro situado todavía en la llanura y que incluye un lago muy extenso, el del bello Río South Platte, y finalmente un sendero igual de hermoso pero muy diferente que empieza en el Parque Matthews-Winters y termina en los Red Rocks, donde ya se asoman las Montañas Rocosas.
Highlights, apart from the chat, were the vast numbers of swallows skimming the lakes, Yellow Warblers in full song, rather than giving their migratory chipping note, and the numerous Bullock’s Orioles, noticeably different from our Baltimores.
A destacar, aparte de la Reinita Grande ya mencionada, son las inmensas bandadas de golondrinas que cazan sobre la superficie de los lagos, las Reinitas Amarillas, las cuales, ya no migratorias, cantan en plena voz aquí que es donde anidan, y finalmente los naranjeros Bullock´s marcadamente differentes a los nuestros de Baltimore.

The return trip to Ticolandia proved rather trying as the Turrialba Volcano rejoiced at my return by belching sufficient clouds of ash to prompt Spirit Airlines to cancel my flight into the San Jose/Alajuela airport.
El viaje de vuelta a Costa Rica se volvió problemático ya que el Volcán Turrialba celebró mi retorno al espetar nubes de cenizas suficientes como para hacer que la aerolínea Spirit suspendió mi vuelo hacia el aeropuerto de Alajuela.
