The Coris area just outside Cartago, on the back road to Patarrá de Desamparados, which is now a suburb of the capital, San José, does not at first sight look suitable for birdwatching. It was therefore quite surprising to find a good number of species there, including several interesting shorebirds at the Porcina property. Shorebirds are definitely hard to come by in the Cartago/Turrialba area and several of these were Costa Rican first sightings for me. Daniel Martinez very kindly introduced me to the area and took most of the pictures that feature below. I suppose that if you’re a North American birder,  you don’t need this post since these shorebirds are easily found where you come from!

A primera vista, el área de Coris, pueblito en los alrededores de Cartago en el camino que llega a Patarrá de Desamparados (ahora, yo creo, parte del Area Metropolitana de San José) no parece muy apropiada para ir a pajarear. Vaya sorpresa, entonces, al encontrar allí buen número de especies, incluyendo varias especies interesantes de aves playeras en la propiedad Porcina. Sin duda es difícil encontrar especies playeras en la región de Cartago/Turrialba, y algunas de las especies de hoy eran para mí nuevas especies aquí en Costa Rica. Es por cortesía de Daniel Martínez que conocí este lugar, y Daniel es también el autor de casi todas fotos que aparecen a continuación. Me imagino que si Ud. es pajarero de Norteamérica podrá prescindir de este report ya que se encuentran estas playeras muy fácilmente allá en el norte.

Daniel wanted me to see the Wilson’s Phalaropes and Pectoral Sandpipers  that he had found there, but also in particular a solitary Baird’s Sandpiper. Since we’re now at the end of the migration season, the phalaropes were gone, but in their place we found a Semipalmated Sandpiper (Calidris pusilla) at what for all the world look like the sewage ponds of a water-treatment centre.

Daniel quería mostrarme no sólo los Falaropos Tricolores y los Correlimos Pechirayados que él había descubierto allí sino también un Correlimos de Baird. Como ya se está finalizando la época migratoria, no estaban los falaropos pero sí un pequeño Correlimos Semipalmado (Calidris pusilla) en un sitio que parece ser parte de una planta potabilizadora.

As is typical with shorebirds, identification was a problem, since both the Least Sandpiper and the Western Sandpiper occur in migration here in Costa Rica. Fortunately we had good close views, and in addition three Pectoral Sandpipers (Calidris melanotus) and the Baird’s Sandpiper (Calidris bairdii), a rarity here so far from the Pacific coast, all appeared nearby. Several Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) served as good size comparisons in addition, and Daniel had his camera!

Como es típico de estas especies de correlimos, la identificación era problemática ya que tanto el Correlimos Menudo y el Correlimos Occidental son especies migratorias aquí en Costa Rica. Afortunadamente, pudimos apreciarlo desde muy cerca, y para colmo aparecieron a su lado tres Correlimos Pechirrayados (Calidris melanotus) y el Correlimos de Baird (Calidris bairdii), muy escaso aquí tan lejos de la Costa del Pacífico. Adicionalmente ayudó la presencia de varios Chorlitejos Tildíos (Charadrius vociferus), los cuales sirvieron bien para comparar los tamaños. ¡Y Daniel tenía su cámara!

Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) is another species not easy to find in our area but this and the Killdeer (both species nesting) were the most conspicuous birds here at Coris on this day.

Otra especie de poca distribución en nuestra zona es la Cigüeñuela  Cuellinegro (Himantopus mexicanus), pero ésta y los vociferus anidan en este lugar y constituían las especies más conspicuas del día.
