I have confessed on previous occasions to being an inveterate lister. And soon, I hope, I will finally pass  the threshold number of 500 species identified in Costa Rica. This week’s sighting of the Ruddy-tailed Flycatcher (Terenotriccus erythrurus) brings me up to 498, and, while this one was quite unexpected, there are still several target birds in our area that shouldn’t be too hard to find if I make the effort.

En otras ocasiones ya he admitido el placer desmesurado que tengo en hacer listados innumerables de aves. Pronto, con suerte, llegaré al valor umbral de 500 especies identificadas en Costa Rica. El encuentro de esta semana con el Mosquerito Colirrufo (Terenotriccus erythrurus) me permite llegar a las 498, y, aunque este avistamiento era muy inesperado, existen todavía en nuestra zona varias especies “diana” que debería ser posible encontrar si me esfuerzo de verdad.

The dirt road leading to the hamlet of La Esperanza that branches off the road to Pejibaye and Tucurrique definitely merits much further investigation. This week’s morning visit with Daniel Martinez brought not only a long list of sightings but a life bird for me in the form of the Ruddy-tailed Flycatcher. The bird perched for us nicely at quite close range, which was quite a boon after an hour or so of neck-ache while peering up into the often dense forest.This species’ status in Costa Rica has gone from common to uncommon between the first publication of Stiles & Skutch in 1989 and the appearance of Garrigues and Dean‘s latest edition of the field guide The Birds of Costa Rica (2014). Its altitudinal range seems to end at around 1000 m on the Caribbean side, so I’m not expecting to find it up here on the lower volcano slopes.

El camino de lastre que conduce al pueblito de La Esperanza y que se desvía de la carretera rumbo a Pejibaye y Tucurrique merece más investigaciones. La visita matinal de esta semana que hice con Daniel Martínez no solamente resultó en una lista larga de avistamientos sino que también en una ave nueva para mí, el Mosquerito Colirrufo. Este individuo se posó muy bonito y muy cerca, lo que fue un gran alivio después de una hora o más de dolor de nuca resultado de mirar hacia arriba escudriñando la densa vegetación. El estatus de esta especie en Costa Rica se ha cambiado de común a poco común en el transcurso de los años entre la publicación de Stiles & Skutch en el 1989 y la última edición de la guía de Garrigues y Dean, Las Aves de Costa Rica (2014). En cuanto a la elevación, parece que termina en los 1000 m en el lado caribeño, así que no espero encontrarla aquí en casa en las faldas del volcán.
