A cuckoo here at home is almost always the resident Squirrel Cuckoo, but today a migrant Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus) flew into the lower branches of the big eucalyptus and stayed long enough for me to make a tentative identification. Tentative, perhaps, because the Black-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus erythrophalmus), a very similar bird that I have seen here just once, is another real, though distant, possibility. The distribution in Costa Rica of these two passage migrants almost identical but the americanus is much more common and occasionally stays as a winter resident.

Al aparecer un cuclillo aquí en casa se trata casi siempre el residente Cuclillo Ardilla, pero hoy entró volando en las ramas más bajas del eucalipto grande una especie migratoria, el Cuclillo Piquigualdo (Coccyzus americanus). Allí se quedó unos segundos, suficiente tiempo para identificarlo por lo menos provisionalmente. Solo provisionalmente, porque el Cuclillo Piquinegro (Coccyzus erythrophalmus), una ave muy similar pero que he visto aquí solamente una vez, es también una remota posibilidad. La distribución en Costa Rica de estas dos especies migratorias de paso es casi idéntica, pero el americanus es mucho más común e incluso algunos individuos pueden quedarse aquí durante el invierno norteño.

The Black-billed has appeared here once in May, while my earlier local sightings of the Yellow-billed were all in the month of October.

El Piquinegro ha aparecido aquí una sola vez, en mayo, mientras que mis avistamientos previos aquí ocurrieron todos en el mes de octubre.
