The Irazú Volcano, highest in Costa Rica at 3432 m (11,260 feet) is a prime location to find highland specialities such as the Timberline Wren (Thryorchilus browni) and the Volcano Junco (Junco vulcani). It is easily reached in half an hour by a good paved road from Cartago and shows the visitor a completely different world to that of the tropical lowlands. The big disadvantage for the foreign tourist is the rather outrageous entrance fee of $15 per person.

El Volcán Irazú, con 3432 m el más alto de Costa Rica, es un lugar privilegiado para encontrar especialidades de altura como el Soterrey del Bambú (Thryorchilus browni) y el Junco Paramero (Junco vulcani). Se llega fácilmente desde la ciudad de Cartago por una buena carretera pavimentada y le ofrece al vistante un mundo totalmente distinto al de las tierras bajas tropicales. El gran inconveniente para el turista extranjero es el exorbitante precio de la entrada ($15 por persona).

Happily, I am now a Costa Rican resident, and at the (considerably) reduced fee for residents I paid a quick visit on a beautiful sunny morning last week. This brought the usual stunning scenic views of the surrounding countryside but also a life bird in the form of the Timberline Wren. I had heard the species and even caught bare glimpses on previous visits to this volcano, but this time a singing pair jumped into full view in the low bushes at the beginning of the visitor path.

Afortunadamente, como residente de Costa Rica, pude pagar la entrada (mucho) más razonable en la mañana de un día bello de sol la semana pasada. Así pude gozar de los asombrosos panoramas escénicos del paisaje de los alrededores, pero también llegué a ver un “lifer” en forma del Soterrey del Bambú. En visitas anteriores ya había escuchado su vocalización, apenas vislúmbrandolo a la misma vez, pero en esta ocasión salió cantando a plena vista una pareja, que se encontraba en los arbustos donde comienza el sendero para los visitantes.

First-time foreign visitors in our area are recommended to seek out highland species here at Irazú, but should bear in mind that almost all local species can also be found fairly easily outside the national park limits.
