I’m taking advantage of Karel Straatman’s beautiful Louisiana Waterthrush (Parkesia motecilla) photograph, taken in another area of Costa Rica, to celebrate the first of this species that I have observed in the San Antonio area.

At our elevation (1300 m), the Northern Waterthrush had, up until a few days ago, been the only waterthrush species to appear in our area. This is generally to be expected, but at the lower elevation (perhaps 950 m) of the nearby San Diego waterfall I found a Louisiana Waterthrush perched on the rocks of Quebrada La Loca in mid-stream. It then clambered up the almost sheer rock wall on one side of the waterfall and disappeared into the first vegetation. It seems this species prefers rocky rivers, while the Northern (photo below, also courtesy of Karel) likes lowland ponds and slower-moving streams.

Como cabría esperar, en nuestras elevaciones (1300 m) la Reinita Acuática Norteña era, hasta esta semana, la única especie de reinita acuática que había aparecido en nuestra área. Pero en la cercana cascada de San Diego (tal vez en 950 m) me topé con una Reinita Acuática Piquigrande posada en las rocas en medio de la Quebrada La Loca. Trepó entonces por la pared escarpadísima a un lado de la cascada para desaparecer entre las primeras matas. Pareciera que esta especie prefiere los arroyos rocosos, mientras que a la Norteña (foto abajo, también cortesía de Karel) le gustan las lagunitas y ríos más lentos de las tierras bajas.
