Gray Hawk near El Carmen / Gavilán Gris cerca de El Carmen

The Gray Hawk (Buteo plagiatus) has now been formally separated from the Gray-lined Hawk (Buteo nitidus), which is found exclusively from southwestern Costa Rica to South America. This beautiful hawk is not a species that is difficult to find in northern and western Costa Rica. It often perches conspicuously, likes open areas with a scattering of trees and even soars fairly frequently. Close to Turrialba, however, sightings are few and far between. It prefers lower locations, which perhaps explains its absence from much of our area.

Gray Hawk, a Christmas present in 2015 for Santa Rosa / Gavilán Gris, regalo navideño 2015 en Santa Rosa

After several sightings near the coffee town of Aquiares, John Beer took this fine photograph of a Gray Hawk in his garden in Santa Rosa on Boxing Day, 2015. It is perhaps the same individual that I found today at perhaps 1000 m elevation, below the village of El Carmen and not far from Aquiares. This is my first local sighting of this species.
