The hamlet of Florencia near San Buenaventura, just outside Turrialba off the Siquirres road, not only has a top-class hotel and restaurant but the surrounding area also offers some surprising bird species. At first sight, the lack of heavy forest and the preponderance of sugar-cane cultivation suggest that bird sightings should be few and far between. Not so.
El pueblito de Florencia cerca de San Buenaventura, situado en los alrededores de Turrialba en una entradita desde la carretera principal que conduce a Siquirres no solamente dispone de un hotel/restaurante de primera categoría sino que también ofrece en las cercanías algunas especies de aves que pueden asombrar. A primera vista la falta de bosque espeso y la abundancia de cultivos de caña sugieren una pobreza de aves. Sin embargo, no es así.

This week’s visit with Minnesotan friend Larry Waddell (many thanks for the photos, Larry!) turned up several species that are not always easy to find. Moreover, the nearby Angostura Reservoir has a resident Snail Kite (Rostrhamus sociabilis) population and some fairly thick forest with big trees on its shores.
La visita de esta semana con el amigo Larry Waddell, residente de Minnesota, a quien le agradezco estas fotos, nos reveló varias especies no siempre fáciles de encontrar. Además, la muy cercana Presa de Angostura alberga una población residente de Elanios Caracoleros (Rostrhamus sociabilis) y en sus orillas quedan unos parches de bosque con árboles muy grandes.

We began at the abandoned sugar mill, whose approach road has rows of telegraph poles overlooking a wide and weedy field. The male American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) is still in winter residence there, so the mousing must continue to be good.
Empezamos en el ingenio abandonado, al cual conduce un camino de lastre con postes telegráficos al lado de un campo ancho y abierto cubierto de maleza. Queda allí todavía como residente invernal un machito de Cernícalo Americano (Falco sparverius), así que seguirá teniendo buena caza de ratones.
Anyone seen any mice around here? ¿Habrán visto algún ratoncito por aquí?
The individual in residence in this location since October was earlier id’d as a female. This species may not be of much interest to visiting North Americans but the ruins of the sugar mill held at least 6 day-roosting Lesser Nighthawks (Chordeiles acutipennis). Steven Aguilar, noted guide from Pavones, says that there are many more but this is the first time I have managed to identify this species in Costa Rica.
El individuo que desde octubre reside en este sitio fue identificado primero como hembra. Puede que esta especie carezca de interés para los visitantes norteamericanos, pero las ruinas del ingenio contenían un mínimo de 6 Añaperos menores (Chordeiles acutipennis) descansando de día. Steven Aguilar, destacado guía ornitólogo que vive en Pavones, me dice que hay muchos más, pero esta es la primera vez que yo llego a identificarlos en Costa Rica.

The Florencia area is particularly rich in seedeaters, grassquits and finches. We had fleeting views of a male Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea) but the photograph that Larry took of what we presumed might be a female shows more probably a female White-collared Seedeater (Sporophila torqueola). Judge for yourself from the picture below.
Los alrededores de Florencia presentan una riqueza particular en cuanto a espigueros, semilleros et alia. Vimos de manera fugaz un macho del Azulillo Norteño (Passerina cyanea), pero la foto que Larry tomó de lo que pensábamos era la hembra muestra más probablemente una hembra del Espiguero Collarejo (Sporophila torqueola).
