Can you help identify the hummingbird in the photo below? Neighbour Sue in San Rafael de Santa Cruz de Turrialba took this photograph of a small hummingbird (compared to the other hummers present, mostly White-necked Jacobins Florisuga mellivora) at friend Wiet’s feeders and asked me for an identification. The best I can come up with is that it’s a male Violet-headed Hummingbird (Klais guimeti), though the white should be behind the eye not below it.  No species exists with a white patch below the eye. The bill is also worrisome because it appears slightly decurved, while the Violet-headed has a straight bill. San Rafael’s elevation is a little bit higher than the usual upper limit for that species, but I have seen it here occasionally. The violet crown of the male is diagnostic but cannot be seen in this photograph.

Y ahora para los que no hablan inglés: ¿Nos podría ayudar con la identificación del colibrí que aparece en la foto abajo? Nuestra vecina Susana tomó esta foto de un colibrí de tamaño pequeño (en comparación con las demás especies presentes, mayoritariamente Jacobinos nuquiblanco Florisuga mellivora) en San Rafael de Santa Cruz de Turrialba en los comederos de nuestra amiga Wiet. Me piden una identificación pero la única posibilidad que veo, un macho del Colibrí Cabeciazul (Klais guimeti), no me convence porque el punto blanco debería estar detrás no debajo del ojo. No hay especie costarricense con mancha blanca bajo el ojo. Problemático me parece también el pico ligeramente decurvado de la foto, mientras que el Klais guimeti tiene el pico recto. La elevación de San Rafael es un poco más alta que el límite normal para esta especie y sin embargo sí la he visto en nuestra área un par de veces. La corona de color violeta del macho es una marca definitiva, pero no se observa en esta fotografía.    

Looking back at this now old post I think this must be a female White-necked Jacobin (Florisuga melliflora). Skutch (A Guide to the Birds of Costa Rica) mentions that many females have ‘more or less’ male-like plumage and are slightly smaller. I was not present myself to see the bird but since Sue mentioned the size disparity compared to the rest of her male jacobins I think this is a fairly safe bet.
