Birders visiting our area of Costa Rica for the first time who consult the bird-guide texts in advance to sort out which Euphonia species they are likely to find will still tend to discount the Yellow-throated Euphonia (Euphonia hirundinacea) on the basis of the distribution maps.

Los pajareros que visitan por primera vez nuestra región de Costa Rica y que consultan los textos de las guías de aves  para determinar cuáles son las especies más susceptibles de aparecer continuarán a descartar la Eufonia Gorgiamarilla (Euphonia hirundinacea), basándose en los mapas de distribución.

However, the comparison between that species and the Yellow-crowned Euphonia (Euphonia luteicapilla) is the very first one that they should be considering, because these are undoubtedly the two commonest euphonia species here. The only other yellow-and-dark-blue species that can confuse here is the White-vented Euphonia (Euphonia minuta), which is much less frequently encountered.

Sin embargo, una comparación entre aquella especie y la Eufonia Coroniamarilla (Euphonia luteicapilla) es la primera comparación básica que deberían considerar, porque éstas son sin duda las dos eufonias más comunes que aquí se encuentran. Sólo queda una eufonia más de colores azul oscuro-amarillo que los podría confundir, la Eufonia Menuda (Euphonia minuta), la cual se ve con mucho menos frecuencia.

It is recommended to contrast the males of these species rather than the all-greenish-yellow females, whose most distinctive difference is the white on the belly (not always easy to see) of the Yellow-throated. All photos of Yellow-throated Euphonias by kind courtesy of John Beer.
